sUMMER200911PartyPoliticalbroadcastByElfynLlwydMPPlaidCymruGroupLeaderEngagingBMEcommunitieshasbeenoneofPlaidCymrux19smainchallengesoverthelastdecade.WiththeadventofproportionalrepresentationintheNationalAssemblyofWaleselectionsithasbecomevitalforPlaidCymrutoperformwellnotjustinourtraditionalheartlandsinwestWalesandthevalleysbutalsointheurbancentresofSwanseaNewportandCardiff.Thishasmeantthatwehavehadtoengagewithcommunitiesthatwehadlittleexperienceofworkingwithinthepast.ThisincludesstudentsfromoutsideWalesyoungprofessionalsandBMEcommunities.ByworkingwithourexistingBMEpartyactivistswehavemanagedtobuildanewactivistbaseandtounderstandtheissuesthataffectBMEcommunities.Ourkeymessagesofindependencethroughnationalself-determinationsocialjusticerespectforlanguageandouroppositiontotheIraqwarresonated.Recentelectionresultshaveproventhis.WehavesucceededinrecruitingcandidatesfromtheBMEcommunity.InNewportMohammadAsgharbecamethefirstBMEcandidatetobeelectedtotheNationalAssemblyforWalesonbehalfofanyparty.InCardiffwehaveseenexceptionallygoodresultsinwardsthatwouldhavetraditionallybeenseenasx18nogox19areasfortheparty.WesucceededingettingfourBMEcandidateselectedinthecapitalandhavebetterBMErepresentationthananyotherpartyontheCouncil.IntheforthcomingEuropeanelectionswehaveastrongBMEcandidateNatashaAsghar.Sheisourfourthcandidateonthelist.FortheWestminsterelectionwehavealreadyselectedtwoBMEcandidatesandarehopingthatthisfigurewillincrease.FaridaAslamisourcandidateinCardiffSouthandPenarth.Sheisaprojectcoordinatorwithahousingassociationandishopingtoimproveonverygoodlocalelectionresultsinthearea.NeilMcEvoyinCardiffWestisdeputyleaderofCardiffCountyCouncil.Hehasbuiltupverystrongsupportinaconstituencythatthepartyislookingtotargetinfuture.AlthoughwehavehadsomesuccessinincreasingoursupportamongBMEcommunitiesandinfindingstrongBMEactivistswestillhavealottodotopersuademoreBMEmembersandactiviststotakethedauntingstepofstandingascandidates.ThisissomethingthatweareworkingtoimproveandwehopetoseemanymorePlaidBMEcandidatesbythenextAssemblyelectionin2011.engagingcommunitix5sisourchallx5ngx5PlaidCymruGroupLeaderElfylnLlwydwithcandidateFaridaAslamCardiffSouthandPenarthLabourMemberslineupParmjitDhandaDavidLammyMarshaSinghDianeAbbottKeithVazDawnButlerSadiqKhanVirendraSharmaMarkHendrick.MissingfrompictureShahidMalikKhalidMahmoodMohammedSarwarandAshokKumar.ConservativeMPsareAdamAfriyieandShaileshVara
