When Charlton Athletic met Notts County earlier this year, both clubs had black managers, Chris Powell and Paul Ince respectively. But when the latter became the 39th Football League manager to lose his job last season, the significance of his exit went beyond the usual tribulations about managerial redundancy. His departure from Notts County left Powell as the only black manager in charge of a British club – Chris Hughton doubled that number when taking over at Birmingham City in the summer.
