OBV urges international support for 'March On for Voting Rights'

Operation Black Vote is calling for international support from equality organisations and individuals, black, brown and white, as Rev Al Sharpton and Rev Martin Luther King III embark on their historic March On for Voting Rights on the 28th August 2021.

On 28 August, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King led 250,000 people on the historic ‘March On Washington’. There, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, calling on the nation to rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. At the time, Black Americans were living under the tyranny of laws known as “Jim Crow” laws, which legalized racial discrimination. His speech that day has become one of the defining moments in American history.

Today, state legislatures are pushing America back to the Jim Crow era with laws that reinstate systemic discrimination at the ballot box. That is why on 28 August, 2021 — 58 years to the day after his father’s march — Martin Luther King III, and Rev Al Sharpton, will help to lead Americans on another march to demand federal voting rights protection.

FACT: In 2021 alone, 18 states have enacted 30 laws to restrict the right to vote, 30 laws too many.

From this side of the Atlantic and beyond we want you to show your support for our American brothers and sisters who will be marching for the heart of soul of a nation by defending one of its central principals - the right to vote, free and unencumbered.
