Pathway 2021: Opening days of the flagship residential fly by
Two days in, and the 2021 Pathway to Success residential feels like it's flown by.
Introductions were led by OBV's Simon Woolley, Professor Chris Stone and Professor Robin Cleveland, as participants eased their way into life at the University of Oxford's Magdalen College.
The programme is run in partnership with the College and the University of Oxford's Blavatnik School of Government as well as Lloyds Bank and the House of Commons. This was the first time that both the March and April cohorts had met with covid restrictions placing the physical residential on hold until now.
The first half of Wednesday brought Ngaire Woods to the stage. She co-led a morning session on the realities of a career in politics alongside OBV's CEO Simon Woolley. The political theme continued into the afternoon as Farrah Bhatti led a session in helping to demystify the House Commons. The workings of Parliament's primary chamber is constantly subject to scrutiny, so an outlook on just how the lower house operates was welcome. Given that some of the Pathway 2021 cohort are already involved in local politics Farrah's contribution was especially valuable.
The group returned from the midday break and engaged in an Oxford Union style debate on climate change and reparations.
Nevertheless, the afternoon session would not end before a farewell ceremony from the OBV team and all in attendance for the departing OBV CEO Simon Woolley, led by OBV COO Ashok Viswanathan. The OBV CEO is preparing to take over as the head of Homerton College at the University of Cambridge
Dominic Grieve, the OBV CEO and the Blavatnik School of Government’s Dinah Rose QC, would front evening discussions on the former attorney general's career in politics before the cohort met with their assigned mentors.
So, how are your debating skills? Are you engaged in civic, political, business or community action? Do you feel you would benefit from a mentor in your leadership journey? If any of these apply to you make sure to follow OBV’s socials and regularly visit the website for future programmes in the pipeline.
