Get involved and make a difference!
Continuing the success of the joint Councillor Shadowing Scheme, the aim of 'Get Involved - Make a Difference' is to encourage active citizenship amongst Bristol's Black and minority ethnic (BME) community by creating greater awareness of decision making institutions and a fuller understanding of power in all its guises.
International poet Marc Yves Regis will headline 'Get Involved - Make a Difference', delivering a lyrical lecture, empowering and engaging the audience with his own unique brand of poetry. The event will also feature a panel discussion and workshops led by civic leaders and prominent activists who will demonstrate the rich benefits of being involved in civic society, serving as an inspiration of the rewards of active citizenship.
'Get involved - Make a Difference' will take place on Monday 24th October 2005 from 10.00am - 2.30pm at Council House, College Green, Bristol.
Georgia Ramsey JP who will facilitate a workshop about becoming a magistrate said, "I feel it is very important for the racial and ethnic mix within the magistracy to reflect local communities. Being a magistrate is an enjoyable way to give something back to my community. I would strongly encourage others to consider applying to become a magistrate and hope my example will pave a way for others. "
A number of workshops will be held including, 'Power of the Media', Citizens Panel, How to become a Magistrate/ School Governor/ Local Councillor and International Democracy.
Getting involved and making a difference
Simon Woolley, Director of Operation Black Vote, "'Get Involved - Make a Difference' is a fantastic initiative, which will lay the foundations for greater civic and political engagement, and also plant the seeds to inspire future decision makers of this country. I look forward with great optimism to Bristol having more BME representatives in our democratic institutions".
