SOS Call For Operation Black Vote In Cardiff
In a packed council Chamber speaker after speaker called for an independent Black organisation based in Wales to address the democratic deficit and tackle racism wherever it reared its ugly head.
Deputy Mayor, Cllr Harry Ernest stated: "My knowledge of Black Welsh history dates back to the 1920's. Our leaders then told us to organise and use the democratic process to tackle racism. We didn't and 80 years on we are still not using our political clout to offer hope for our youngsters. If we support OBV we can turn things around."
Malik Abdulhai, brother of the one of the Cardiff 3, commended the OBV Chair: "When I needed help I turned to Lee Jasper, he was there for me when there was no one else to turn to. He has shown a commitment to individuals, and the black community as a whole."
Lee Jasper, Chair of OBV gave assurances regarding OBV launch in Wales: "It will be Welsh lead and fully supported by us. We will work with the assembly, the RECs and all Black groups. We will ensure that the assembly works for Black people too."
