Press Release:Government commit to increase in Black councillors
The Equalities PSA indicated the Government’s determination to fight discrimination and ensure everybody in Britain can make the most of their talents regardless of their gender, race, sexuality, age, faith or disability.
OBV are particularly encouraged by the focus on increasing the number of BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) people in political and civic life such as councillors, magistrates and school governors. OBV hope that all political parties will follow suit in striving for race equality and black representation.
Simon Woolley, Director of Operation Black Vote said: The proposals in the spending review cement the Governments commitment to tackling the under representation of Black female councillors, and encourages wider civic engagement from all black and minority communities. I hope that this is embraced as a non-party political position because we are all affected when there are so many who are left without a voice or equality.
Harriet Harman, Equality Secretary said: Black and Minority Ethnic women play a crucial role within their communities and in building bridges between communities. This contribution needs to be better recognised and supported. We will work to further support and empower Black and Minority Ethnic women so they can have opportunities to work and take part in wider public life.
Notes to editor
OBV have recently been commissioned to write a report on black only shortlists for the Labour Party, and have also worked with the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens.
