Local election campaign targets the far-Right

Teaming up with national black and anti-racist organisations including the 1990 Trust and National Assembly Against Racism it will be getting the vote out for election day.

An ad-van poster based on the quote from 18th century parliamentarian Edmund Burke will tour the country aimed at encouraging and inspiring greater turn out in light of the far-Right threat. The message on the poster is as follows: "'All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.' Use your Voice. Use you Vote."

The poster will start at 11am tomorrow (Tuesday 29th April) outside Newham Town Hall, Barking Road (High Street South), East Ham E6

Simon Woolley, National Co-ordinator of Operation Black Vote said: "France and Le Pen have provided a clear warning of the dangers of complacency and the need to stand up and be counted. Only a mobilised and organised black and anti-racist electorate can beat the scourge of the far-Right. This nation-wide campaign is part of that strategy"

Karen Chouhan, of the 1990 Trust said: "The BNP have ditched their jackboots for bespoke suits, but don't be fooled they're still the same thugs that terrorise neighbourhoods and destroy community relations. Many of the 68 candidates they are standing up and down the country have criminal records for violence. We must remember that this Thursday." Denis Fernando, of the National Assembly Against Racism said: "It is on a local level that the far-Right capitalise on successes. If you look at Austria, Belgium and Holland it is through town halls that the fascists then go on to gain an international stage. We have to exercise our democratic right to stop this eventuality."

Notes to the editor

OBV will be targeting the far-Right in East London and North-Western towns on election day. The poster will be on display in East London tomorrow, and in the Oldham and Burnley on Thursday. Images of the ad van are available.
