Press release: OBV and Barack Obama - 'Moment in History' Celebration
Obama's groundbreaking candidacy also signals the possibility of a new era of inclusive politics; one that speaks to Americans of all races, classes and creeds. This vision readily translates across the Atlantic to inspire an 'Obama generation' here in the UK.
OBV Director Simon Woolley says: "Black people, especially the young, are coming out of the shadows proclaiming 'I want to be like Obama too'. This truly is a generational change that will have a profound and positive impact".
Whatever the outcome of the US Presidential Election 2008, historically, Obama's achievement will follow in the footsteps of great leaders such as Dr Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, who sought to politically engage and inspire their generation.
In honour of an outstanding Presidential candidate and to commemorate this 'Moment in History', OBV along with Ministers, senior politicians, 'A' list celebrities, and prominent Black leaders will gather to celebrate the milestone achievement of one of African America's most promising political figures.
Chuka Umunna
The celebration will include 'open mic' speeches from Cabinet Ministers and leading social commentators. The event takes place on Election night, Tuesday, 4th November 2008.
'Obama generation' political candidates Chuka Umunna and Helen Grant who will compete for seats as Labour and Conservative MPs at the next general election says:
Chuka Umunna Streatham Labour Party Parliamentary Candidate: "Obama has single-handedly re-engaged a generation to become excited about politics. Behind his impressive political machine lies an individual who has enthused millions to get involved in his campaign. Watching it evolve has been a delight and an inspiration".
Helen Grant
Helen Grant Conservative Party Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Maidstone & The Weald: "Barack Obama has achieved prominence at a time when the world is looking for political stability and nations are looking towards a change. His candidacy will provide the impetus for many on the sidelines to seriously consider the difference they could bring to politics".
