Race inequality ‘entrenched’ in UK report finds

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has given its most damning report on the state of race inequality perhaps for a generation. Not only does it highlight entrenched racial disadvantage in key area of education, employment and the criminal justice system, but it also flags up the post Brexit rise in race hate crime that could, it argues, have profound and long lasting effect.

She told Desert Island Discs presenter Kirsty Young that before, during and after winning the programme, she has been on the receiving end of racism, stating:

Dalian Atkinson killed in police taser shooting

The former top flight footballer Dalian Atkinson died after being repeatedly tasered by police in the early hours of Monday morning.

After being alerted by what seems to be a serious domestic incident at his father’s home, police deployed a taser against Atkinson. 90 minutes after being hit, despite medics trying to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

I’m sure there are many who are not aware that the nation with one the largest number of Africans and descendents of Africa it is not even on the African continent. Today Brazil, the host of the 2016 Olympic Games has nearly 100 million citizens of African descent.

Such was the scale of 300 years of Portuguese slavery that more than half its citizens have the DNA of enslaved Africans. Brazil, like Cuba and the Caribbean was a nation built on slavery, only the scale of the Portuguese endeavour was much greater and lasted a lot longer.

Last week saw local elections in South Africa, a country where the ANC (African National Congress), the party most closely associated with the independence movement lost heavily in most of its keys towns and cities. In 1994, South Africa took a giant step forwards as an independent country with it's first Black President, Nelson Mandela.

In an unprecedented move activists representing the movement Blacklivesmatters here in the UK undertook a day of civil action across the country, in particular causing chaos around the roads leading to Heathrow airport.

This co-ordinated action comes on the 5th anniversary of both the death of Mark Duggan, and the nationwide riots that were sparked as a consequence.
