Ashlea Williams: My time at OBV

in

It's my last (official) day at OBV and its one naturally tinged in no small part, with sadness. I have been a volunteer here since January and it has been an incomparable experience.

I have met some wonderful people, even a hero or two, and my time here has not only served to fuel my determination to change the world but to also reinforce the tangibility of the possibility of my dream for a prominent life in Politics.

From my first day everyone was so warm and welcoming and I was inducted into a family that genuinely wants to better society, within my first month I visited the Houses of Parliament unaccompanied, exceptionally exciting for me. OBV does not aim to lead a disruptive crusade against government and society on behalf of black and other BME people, simply rabble rousing for the sake or causing dissention as some may believe.

OBV simply want to bring practical actuality to the universal truth that all men are created equal and should in all ways be treated as such. They bring dissention when needed, with the goal of eradicating the apathy for politics in many and the disadvantage of societal attitudes in the UK and beyond. It is an organisation that has inspired my dedication and support and it is astonishing to me, and a shame, that they are not better known and endorsed.

I will be forever grateful to the friend that led me here, and for her and the entire OBV team's encouragement and for the opportunities afforded me. Meeting living legend Reverend Jesse Jackson for the first time will permanently remain a highlight of my life, and author Gary Younge, people who have literally had a hand in carving history has been incredible.

I have been afforded the occasion, met Councillors and Mayors, MPs and Magistrates, High Commissioners and Ambassadors, invited on radio shows and become a published writer all during my short time here. I will continue to remain in contact with everyone here and will check in from time to time, as life demands I will move on to new pastures but I am certain OBV will remain a solid part of my future - when I make it to my own seat on those green benches I will know I owe it in part to all these people right here. Francine, Simon, Rafiq, Merlene, thank you for the opportunity.
