British Chinese Project and OBV: A voice for UK’s Chinese
Yesterday during the Chinese New Year celebrations in London’s China Town, Operation Black Vote collaborated with the British Chinese Project to raise awareness about voter registration and empower the UK’s Chinese communities to have a strong voice in May’s 2015 Election.
Although most people came out yesterday to enjoy the celebrations for the Year of the Goat, hundreds came by the OBV eXpress to gather leaflets and register to vote online. The Collaboration with BCP and OBV ensured that volunteers were on hand to speak with Chinese people young and old in their native tongue about the necessity to register to vote and speak out about issues concerning Chinese people in the UK.
One young woman told me, she’d never done this before, but was extremely pleased to see Chinese self organisation that would give her community a voice.
The British Chinese Project will join other organisations such as Operation Disability Vote, Bite the Ballot and many others for OBV’s national tour, which officially kicks off this Thursday at noon in Windrush Square , Brixton.
We’ll hope you’re be there rain or shine, to make a statement to our political class, that the BME vote will be absolutely crucial, and that we will be participating and demanding greater racial equality.
