Celebrating Minority Women
Yesterday was International Women’s Day and The Asian Today honoured a group of BME women in their article “10 Inspirational British Asian Women”. Writer Hifzra Shaheen acknowledges ten innovative and motivational women who embody this year’s theme of #PledgeforParity, women who exhibit inspirational qualities and fight for equality.
Shaheen lists politicians like Baroness Sayeeda Warsi who was the first Muslim woman on a Government ministerial cabinet, Priti Patel MP who helped diversify the Conservative Party, and Naz Shah MP who shared her own violent history to support other women. Activist Shaista Gohir MBE also makes the list as a Muslim Feminist who empowers women and fights for equal rights.
The list also includes Rimla Akhtar who made unprecedented success in the sports industry by becoming a member of the Football Association Council, and Annie Zaidi a football couch who defied the odds against racism and sexism in her industry.
Shaheen incorporates famous public figures as well like Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain, Shivvy Jervis a former television journalist and now technology entrepreneur, Noreen Khan a radio presenter and Youtube vlogger, and finally famous actress Bhavna Limbachia who starred on the influential show Citizen Khan.
