Chuka Umunna promoted to Labour's shadow cabinet
Chuka Umunna has been promoted to Labour’s shadow cabinet after being named as Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.
The 32-year-old is a number of MPs who were only elected last year and takes over from John Denham who stepped down from the shadow cabinet ahead of the reshuffle.
Umunna has been tipped for big things ever since he was elected as Member of Parliament for Streatham in May 2010 and he took to his Twitter feed to express his delight.
Umunna wrote,
"Many thanks for all the kind words of congrats. Am deeply honoured to be asked to serve as Shadow Business Secretary by (Ed Miliband) @Ed_Miliband. For me the move to Shadow BIS Sec is less about me and more about how we get growth back and build a new better economy for all."
Sadiq Khan meanwhile has been retained as Shadow Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.
Following the announcement of his new-look shadow cabinet, Miliband said,
"My decision to appoint half a dozen members of the 2010 intake shows the talent that Labour has and the way in which this new generation can join us in taking Labour's agenda forward. Together we will show how the Government are failing to help families who face a cost of living crisis, how they are failing to take action on energy bills and rail fares and failing to get the economy moving again. They will show how we aspire to be a government not for more of the same but to deliver a new bargain for the British people."
