Danny Boyle remembers Walter Tull

As the nation paused to remember the 1st World War heroes in the 100 year anniversary of the end of that war, film Director Danny Boyle made his own moving tribute the fallen, including the Black hero Walter Tull.

Faces on the some of the young men that died have been recreated on beeches around the country.

Tull who was the first black officer in the British Army will be commemorated on Ayr beach as part of director Danny Boyle’s Armistice commission ‘Pages of the Sea.’

Lieutenant Walter Tull, was also one of the first black professional footballers who had signed up with Rangers, and trained as an officer cadet in Gailes, Ayrshire.

A large-scale portrait of Walter Tull designed by sand artists Sand In Your Eye, will be drawn into the sand on the beach and washed away as the tide comes in.

Danny Boyle said:

I wanted to issue an invitation for you to join is on your own beaches to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, the end of the 14-18 war.”

Operation Black Vote along with many campaigners, including Tull’s family and the writer Michael Morpurgo, -who wrote a fictional tale around the life of Walter ( A medal for Leroy), -have long campaigned for Tull to be awarded a  posthumous Military Cross.

OBV have seen documentation that recommended Tull for the Cross for his bravery. However,  for the last  100 years the British Military refuse to honour the man in spite of the clear recommendation from his superiors

In this centenary anniversary of this most brutal and bloody war what a better way to remember this Walter Tull, who had to fight so many battles both on and off  the field of war, to finally award him the merit he so truly deserves.
