Farewell to an inspirational role model - The Hon Amanda (Mandy) Howells - 11.1.11

This article pays tribute to Mandy Howells who passed away at Guys Hospital in London on Tuesday morning, 11th January 2011, with her mother and sister at her bedside. Aged 49, she had fought a courageous 18-month battle with non-hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer.

Mandy will be remembered in local, national and international communities as a loving daughter, sister and aunt and as one of the kindest, most loving campaigners, role models and volunteers of our time. She gave her whole life to community causes, worked as a manager at Connexions, as well as voluntarily mentoring for projects such as "Minority Plus" in Lewisham where she supported 40 youths at one time.

Mandy was particularly interested in issues affecting young people and pro-actively volunteered for 100 Black Men of London and for the Woodson Barrow Luncheon, alongside fundraising for charities and cancer research, amongst other things. She spent many hours of her time highlighting various campaigns including "Race for Life" for Cancer Research and the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (see below). 

In 1999, Mandy received her title "The Honourable" when her mother, the renown equalities activist, became Baroness Howells of St Davids.

Mandy was British, born in London, and loved her mixed heritage as a true daughter of both Britain and the Caribbean. She will long be remembered for her relentless commitment to her family, for her love of all things carnival and for her zest for her latest passion - salsa!

Mandy will always be remembered because her life really did make a difference.

Gone but never forgotten – loved forever.

In her own inimitable way, it is Mandy's wish that no floral tributes be made, just a donation to support a cause. Her chosen causes are:-
