The Hallowed Turf: Walter Tull story on stage

in

With Black History Month approaching, it is important to remind ourselves of the many sacrifices people have made to get us to where we are today, Walter Tull being one of them. The Grandson of an enslaved man in Barbados, Tull lost his parents at a very young age and spent rest of his youth living in an orphanage.

However , his bravery led him to become one of the most iconic role models of his generation, as he became the first black outfield player to play in the top division.

Whilst receiving severe racial abuse from opposing fans, Tull staggered along and as WW1 broke out, he volunteered himself to fight. He made history not just on the pitch, but also in the army as he became the first Black Combat Officer to fight in WW1, an unimaginable achievement during the time, despite the 1914 Manual of Military Law specifically excluding ‘Negroes’ from becoming officers. Tull led his men on dangerous missions behind enemy lines and returned without loss or injury; for these acts of bravery he was recommended for the Military Cross.

Tull’s bravery and courage has led him to become a great role model, and his inspiring story needs to be told. Gazebo Theatre’s latest production, The Hallowed Turf, tells the true story of Walter Tull, from the view of a young unknown soldier who meets his hero on the frontline. This young soldier, who dreamt of becoming a footballer, is bought together with his role model in some of the worst conditions. This incredible story shows bravery, courage, friendship and the true horrors of life in the trenches.

OBV has collaborated with Gazebo production, to support the campaign to call upon Prime Minister David Cameron to posthumously award Walter Tull the Military Cross for which he was recommended for. Help support us by signing the petition to ensure this brave hero gets the recognition he deserves.

His story is one worth telling, and Gazebo Theatre will be putting on a great production all across the country, to show you the achievements and experiences of Tull, and how his bravery and courage has taught us lessons about prejudice in all areas of life, which unfortunately still occurs.

This production is a must, and Gazebo are giving away two free tickets to the first 6 people who can answer this question correctly.
