Holi - Hindu festival celebration this weekend
The Hindu Holi festival will bring out the colour this weekend as families gather to celebrate.
The Holi festival is an ancient annual celebration of the triumph of good over bad. The colorful festival bridges social gaps and renews relationships, it’s a day when people hug and wish each other 'Happy Holi'.
The Holi day is celebrated world-wide at some time between the end of February and Early March and a free event is taking place this Sunday, arranged by the Richmond Council Arts Service and the Ethnic Minorities Advocacy Group, in association with Hampton Academy. The event will showcase a variety of performances featuring young people from the borough.
A Bollywood dance workshop, Dhol drumming and a wide selection of Indian food will be offer at Twickenham’s Orleans House Gallery to mark the annual festival of colour, which marks the end of winter and the beginning of Spring.
Families are invited to a colourful day of events to celebrate Holi and Councillor Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council’s cabinet member for community development, said: “The festival will be an excellent day for the whole family.
“Last year over 2,000 people took part in the traditional throwing of coloured powder, as well as enjoying a variety of live music and dance.
“Orleans House Gallery will be alive with music and dance, with the throwing of colour always a highlight.”
