Joshua Robertson saves 87-year old from fire
You hear a lot about what is wrong with our youths today with particularly demonisation of Black youths. Truth is there are an awful lot of good young men and women, who are studying hard and trying to be good citizens.
One young man in particular stands out during a most extraordinary moment which saved the life of an elderly pensioner.
Joshua Robertson, 15, of Greenwich, a police cadet has received a commendation for saving the life of an 87-year old pensioner whilst on his paper round. In a situation which demanded quick thinking and extreme bravery, Robertson dragged the pensioner to safety from a blazing house after covering his face and entering the house. He said:
I realised when I was approaching there was thick black smoke coming from the window and the alarm was going off.
I ran into the house and the kitchen was up in huge flames, the table, the floor and the toaster and there was thick black smoke everywhere.
Eventually, I managed to talk to her and encourage her to come out of the house. She’d become confused, I think because she’d lived at the house a long time, and so I had to grab her quite hard to get her out of the door. She was really shocked and distressed.
It helped that me and her were friends because we chatted whenever I delivered the papers about the news that day or programmes on TV.”
Both were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but later released.
Superintendent Parm Sandhu added:
He’s extremely modest. We only found out about his life-saving efforts after his fellow cadets told us.”
Well young man, we are all very proud of you, and hope that others follow in your civic-minded duty to help others where necessary.
