Marcus Garvey’s son arrives for UK tour
Dr Julius Garvey MD, son of human rights activist Marcus Mosiah Garvey, will visit the UK from 30th September to 5th October 2013 as part of celebrations during Black History Month.
An eminent surgeon, Dr Garvey will travel from his home in the USA to tour the UK for the first time. He will take part in a full programme of activities including attending receptions at the Jamaican High Commission and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as well as giving talks and lectures at schools, universities and community centres in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham.
The Lord Mayors of Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham and the Mayor of Lewisham in South East London, will all be welcoming Dr Garvey personally. There will be a final farewell gala celebration of his visit at Blackheath Halls, Blackheath, South East London in the evening of Saturday October 5th.
Dr Garvey’s lectures will focus on education, culture and young people to help them understand their roots, look positively to their future and to take their rightful place in society. His tour, entitled ‘Doing It For Love’, will reflect on the past, look to the future and review the lasting legacy of Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The talks address three topics: Garveyism for the 21st century; The Spiritual Message of Marcus Garvey; Freeing the mind – transforming the self.
He will also pay tribute to his father, Jamaica’s first national hero and a major human rights leader who died in London on 10 June 1940.
Dr Garvey’s visit will be of historic importance to the UK and Britain’s black communities in particular. Black History Month is a national event celebrating the history of Africa, the Caribbean and pan-African diasporas.
‘Doing It For Love’ is organised by Treatment Music in association with the Jamaican High Commission, Lewisham Council and other partners.
Dr Julius Garvey will visit Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester and Lewisham.
OBV welcomes Dr Garvey to the UK and wishes the tour the greatest success.
