OBV welcomes Britain's new BME MPs

Operation Black Vote began in 1996 to ensure we have greater racial justice and equality in the UK for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic people. One of our key pillars has and will always be voter registration. To empower Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people through politics by exercising our right to vote. We've equally sought to increase BME representation in politics, to ensure that our institutions have our voices within key decesion making institutions.

Thursday’s election saw the arrival of the most diverse parliament ever seen in the history of British politics. When we began our mission there were only 4 BME MPs in parliament, now there are 65. We are proud of all these MPs on this achievement, some re-entering parliament, others taking their seats in Westminster for the first time. We are equally proud that 10% of those BME MPs came from OBV schemes, such as the newly elected Member of Parliament for Erith and Thamesmead Abena Oppong-Asare.

OBV hopes to celebrate all these BAME MPs in the New Year and to ensure we keep moving forward. We hope these MPs continue to help deliver  greater race quality and justice for our communities, and to be our strong voices in parliament.
