Orlando: America's worst mass murder since 9/11
Today America mourns the unprecedented mass shootings in its recent history. The gunman, a 29 year old US citizen Omar Mateen, embarked on a murderous rampage with has left 50 dead and another 50 injured.
During the bloody shootings at a gay and lesbian club in Orlando, Florida he called the emergency services declaring his sympathies for the Islamic State.
As the world mourns it didn't take much for Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump to seek to make political capital from the tragedy by reiterating that all Muslims should be banned from entering the US. The fact that Mateen was a US citizen seems to be lost on Trump.
Even more worrying than the political opportunism of Trump, was the fact that Mateen, who'd been investigated three times by the FBI, had mental health issues and had beaten his former wife, was able to go into a shop and buy an assault rifle, and semi automatic pistol just days before he embarked on his carnage.
How many mass shootings will it take for the USA to recognise that unless the nation is at war its citizens do not need to be buy semi automatic pistols much less high powered assault rifles , the type of which was used by Mateen.
The LBGT community around the world are in particularly morning after it was clear that their community was specifically targeted by the gunman. But equally the attack on the gay club is an attack against all of us and the values we hold.
This brand of radical extremism seeks to tear our communities apart, ensuring that we fight against each other, but we must resist that as forcibly as we can.
Our thoughts go out to the hundreds of family and friends who have lost or had love ones injured in this deadly attack.
