Sadiq Khan MP: 'We'll tackle race inequality'
Thursday 15th May from 5.45pm - 7.00pm. Doors open at 5.30pm, Bethnal Green. Few places left.
This Thursday, at OBV’s headquarters in Bethnal Green, the Shadow Justice Minister Sadiq Khan will give a major speech setting out how the Labour plans to effectively tackle racial inequality within Britain today.
Although we haven’t seen any details of the speech, we are informed that the plans will include key policy directives both generally and specifically.
This move can only be welcomed, and in many ways further shows the real power of the BME vote outlined by both the Right-wing think tank Policy Exchange just two weeks ago, and OBV’s own research which outlined that 168 marginal seats could be decided by the Black vote.
Interestingly, within the last two months alone the Government have announced two significant changes which directly affect BME communities: First, the scrapping of the present Air Passenger Duty (APD) which unfairly penalised those travelling to and from the Caribbean and the Indian subcontinent, and secondly the Home Secretary’s decision to overhaul the practice of ‘Stop and Search’, which disproportionately targeted young Black youths.
It is absolutely clear that we have the ability to achieve greater racial justice, the last few months are testimony to that. But given that over a number of years we’ve lost ground on tackling race inequality, we must now regain that ground and go further. Much further.
We have a few places left, for what we hope will be a ground-breaking speech. Email us on a first-come first served basis to get a place and hear Sadiq Khan MP.
The event will take place at OBV' headquarters, 18a Victoria Park Square, London, E2 9PB. Nearest tube station is Bethnal Green (central line).
Email tickets@obv.org.uk with 'Sadiq Khan MP Speech' in the subject.
Keep strong, and don’t forget to vote on the 22nd May.
