Sol Campbell enters London Mayoral race

The Mayoral race for London is hotting up with the mainstream parties all picking their runners and riders. Each will hope to identify that one candidate that is most likely to deliver them electoral success in London. With London being the second most important job in British politics the competition will be fierce.

London's diversity will be and incredibly important aspect of next year’s elections and has attracted interest from a wide range of potential candidates.

Latest to a throw his hat into the Mayoral ring is former England Captain and ex Arsenal and Tottenham defender, Sol Campbell. Standing for the Conservatives, Sol was recently featured in our national voter registration campaign.

As soon as we asked him to take part he replied, “I’d be honoured to help, because it’s the right thing to do.”

We couldn’t help but be impressed with his solid and forthright commitment.

Sol, who won 73 caps for his country and played in three world cups, is taking his bid Mayoral very seriously and is not going into this selection process, wearing rose tinted glasses either.

At his launch he stated

I bring something new to the table. This is a whole new road for me, something I can get my teeth into but I just felt it was something I had to do."

He stated:

I’m going in with my eyes wide open. I know I'm not going to be a frontrunner."

Lamenting the current state of polices, he added:

But I look at people who have been in politics for five, 10, 15 years, and muck up, you see them muck up and think, 'You guys are supposed to be pro!'

People [who] have gone to Oxbridge, had thousands spent on their education, and I mean they are royally mucking up,"

His first real test will come on 4th July when he and other Tory candidates, entrepreneur Ivan Massow, current deputy mayor Stephen Greenhalgh and London Assembly member Andrew Boff and Tory rising star Zac Goldsmith will attend critical hustings meeting.

Let’s hope he makes it and takes part in what may well be the most diverse election ever seen in recent British political history.
