Tory leader! Who will best deliver race equality?

in

Not since the end of the 2nd World War has Britain has seemed so uncertain about its leadership and vision for the future. Worse still the xenophobic climate has made many of us feel decidedly anxious about what direction our society will go.

Equally, unprecedented as a direct result of Brexit is that both main political parties will in the weeks and months ahead be choosing who will be their leader.

Tomorrow the official Conservative leadership campaign will begin with three clear candidates in the frame: Boris Johnson, Theresa May and Stephen Crabb, Nicky Morgan and Jeremy Hunt are still deciding whether or not they should run, which basically means, to put your name in the frame and see if your colleges will support you.

Most pundits believe that the contest will be between May and Johnson. Boris Johnson is seen as a charismatic individual, who was probably the deciding factor for those party faithful who decided to Leave Europe, whilst many see Theresa May as a very safe pair of hands, having been the longest serving Home Office Secretary in recent history, and someone who is most able to unite her party, and more importantly a Conservative who is best placed to unite the country.

There is a lot at stake and as we’ve seen over the last few months the Conservatives, as with Labour, these Politian’s see nothing in engaging the type of unseemly politics that have destroyed lifelong friendships.

For BME communities we must ask ourselves which of these potential Prime Ministers will best deliver race equality in the UK?

We must implore our BME Conservative MP’s to think more about this than their naked ambitions, and that of the BME Conservative membership who’ll ultimately decide which of the candidates runs our country.

It doesn’t seem likely that we can unBrexit Brexit, but we must demand leadership that will stamp out xenophobia and have a real plan for delivering race equality for all.
