City of London Police - We want you
The City of London Corporation is currently looking to appoint 2 external members to its Police Committee. The City of London Police is responsible for safety in the City of London, the Square Mile. There are about 8,000 residents in the City although this number is swelled daily by an influx of some 350,000 commuters, as well as people travelling through and visitors.
The City Corporation is essentially a local policing body whose job is to ensure that there is value for money in the way the police is run and that sets policing priorities take into account the views of the local community. The Police Committee meets eight times a year to rigorously scrutinise the work of the City of London Police. The Committee is made up of 13 members. Eleven of the members are elected members of the Court of Common Council, thus ensuring a direct accountability to the electorate. The remaining two are independent persons drawn from the City community who are appointed through an open recruitment process.
External members of the Police Committee will play a key part in improving police performance and raising the standards of policing in the City of London. They also help ensure that people from all local communities receive fair and non-discriminatory police services.
External members can have a crucial input into the strategic direction of the City of London Police. Not only are they expected to develop strong links with local communities, they can also gain a critical insight into policing both locally and nationally.
This is an exciting opportunity for two people with a genuine interest in policing to help the Committee to ensure that the City of London Police delivers a fair, efficient and effective police service.
This is a pro-bono position and is open to people who work or live in the City of London (the Square Mile). The closing date for applications is noon on 29 March 2013. For more information contact the Town Clerk’s Office, City of London Corporation policing@cityoflondon.gov.uk or 020 7332 1405.
