Labour’s Black members revolt against Lambeth

in

The governing body which represents Black and minority ethnic members in the Labour Party -BAME Labour- is in open revolt against Lambeth Labour Leader Lib Peck and some factions within the party, in regards to how Adeline Aina has been treated.

In what is an unprecedented move, BAME Labour has written a most damning open letter claiming the discriminatory actions of Lambeth council not only breach natural justice but also is damaging the Labour Party.

Two very senior MP’s are also said to be very concerned about developments, including BAME Labour, NEC member Keith Vaz, and local Lambeth MP Kate Hoey.

Let’s hope that this timely intervention by BAME Labour and senior MP’s force Peck and others to radically rethink how they treat this woman. Senior figures are now rightly beginning to ask, ‘who is bringing this party into disrepute?

Below is BAME Labour’s open letter.

Simon Woolley

BAME Labour is 100% behind Adeline Aina fight for to be a Council Candidate in Lambeth for May 2014.

BAME Labour has written to Iain McNicol the General Secretary of The Labour Party to immediately intervene on behalf of the NEC to stop Adeline Aina being deselected by Lambeth LCF. Adeline should be recognised by the local party as one of the official candidates for Larkhall Ward for the Council elections in May 2014.

BAME Labour have major concerns regarding the nature of the process undertaken by the Lambeth LCF which undermines the confidence between the party and BAME members and community, particularly at a time when we have forthcoming Council and General elections. The local party has breached fair play and natural justice in creating new rules to determine who is a Labour Party candidate which has led to a black women being discriminated.

This case further highlights a growing number of cases of bullying and discrimination against potential candidates in Council and Parliamentary Selection processes that have been highlighted to the BAME Executive. We hope to work with the NEC so that a clear and transparent complaints procedure and appeal mechanism for race and sex discrimination around selection that can be considered as part of the Lord Collins review on the Party’s governance structures.
