There is still time for you to vote today!
With elections taking place across the country today, some may see voting almost as a hassle, but it is always important to realise why voting is so important.
I am currently studying Politics and Economics, and with exams just finished, I was determined to start helping and campaigning in my local community. For me voting is power. Living in a democratic country we have the chance to make a difference, a chance for our voices to be heard. Many individuals may feel voting is a waste of time, but if you want things changed in your local community or nationwide, voting for someone that represents your views is crucial. There are many people all around the world sanctioned for having a voice. This was exemplified recently in Iran, with students being arrested for filming a video tribute to Pharrell Williams' song Happy. These students were silenced, for a harmless celebration of the song. This suppression of their rights, makes it incumbent upon us to be responsible and make our voices heard. Therefore, we should grab every opportunity we have and make the most of it; otherwise later on in life we’ll regret not voting.
With being only 19, and just finishing my first year of university, I’ve realised how important it is to vote and to encourage others around you to vote. My parents are a prime example, they have been living in this country for over 25 years, and this was their first time voting. By encouraging people to vote around you, it can really help them get involved in politics and have a say in decisions that will change their lives.
There are a number of ways you can get involved during election time, from helping out at the polling stations or even just taking your family and friends along and voting. Make voting a family event, take your children and empower the next generation. Every vote counts, and with the rise of extremist parties, we need make sure we go out of our way and vote in order to make sure your views are represented.
There should be no excuses today to get out and vote; polling stations are open till 10pm and it will only take you a few minutes, but at the end of it you’ll feel empowered, that you have had a say in how your life should be governed.
