Vote for OBV’s Rita Patel
In its second year the #EightWomen awards run by the MediaDiversified.org, is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women of colour across the UK and to spread awareness of the amazing work they do. Some of the nominees you’ll know, some you won’t, but regardless these trailblazers are very much worth celebrating!
We at OBV celebrate all these women; their achievements, strengths, and ability to keep giving to our communities.
But we hope that along with us, you’ll pay particular attention to Operation Black Vote’s long standing Chair Rita Patel.
Rita has been a guiding light for the OBV for nearly twenty years. She is one of its founders and has chaired the organisation for over a decade .
Like many Black women of her generation Rita Patel has become a role model and hero not out of choice, but rather because she recognised that the work of racial justice needed to done. Her heart and soul is driven by equality and justice.
In her home town of Leicester, Rita persuaded the then Body Shop chief Anita Rudduck to invest time and money in the Peepul centre as an international cultural space run and governed by Black people for the benefit of everyone.
Rita then persuaded Nelson Mandela’s oldest daughter Zindzi to come and launch centre. The two have remained close friends for more than a decade .
For this unassuming hero-Rita Patel- let's collectively say thank you and vote for her as one of eight dynamic women.
