Still no justice for Duggan family

in

Three senior judges today rejected an appeal from Mark Duggan’s family that the Coroner of the original inquest into his killing, misdirected the Jury during his summing up.

Last summer the Jury found that Mark Duggan was lawfully killed by a Met officer in the summer of 2011, which sparked civil disturbances across the country.

The argument for the appeal centres around the Coroner Judge directing the jury that the officer might have been using self defence, even though the jury concluded Duggan was unarmed when he was shot.

A gun was found some 30ft away from where Duggan was shot and killed. Mark Mansfield QC representing the Duggan family argued that:

How is it a man who is manifestly unarmed can be lawfully shot”.

This is another setback for the Duggan family. But the Judges today did not rule out the family taking the case to the civil courts, where the threshold of claiming self-defence is much higher.
