Lewisham Council and Operation Black Vote will launch this week another dynamic civic leadership programme.
The programme encourages and nurtures BME individuals to better understand civic and democratic leadership, with the aim that they go on to become future leaders. The areas that individuals will be involved with include: education, local politics, the magistrates courts, health boards and community group trustees.
One previous participant of the scheme, stood for selection as a candidate, and was elected in the 2010 local elections. Cllr Janet Daby is now a cabinet member in Lewisham.
The event will take place on Friday 9th October 2015 at the Civic Suite, Catford Road, London SE6 4RU, between 6.00pm - 7.30pm.
Simon Woolley, Director of Operation Black Vote said:
Lewisham has one of the most diverse communities in London and the UK. It is a borough that is both full of dynamism and challenges. With the support of the Mayor this projects seeks to tap into that rich talent pool, confront some of the challenges and nurture a generation of leaders that will benefit everyone in Lewisham, black or white.
Mayor of Lewisham, Steve Bullock said:
The OBV Lewisham Civic Leadership Programme will continue to inspire BME individuals to be civic champions, and be a force for change that is the lifeblood of Lewisham and its communities.
END.
