Wisconsin: The beginning of the end for Trump?
After a week of controversy the Trump campaign lost to Cruz in the Wisconsin primary, an upset that will make it very difficult for Trump to secure enough delegates for the Republican nomination.
Prior to the Wisconsin primary Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski was arrested for assault and battery against a reporter, and Trump himself made multiple contentious statements on abortion, foreign policy, and nuclear weapons.
On women who have abortions Trump said:
there has to be some form of punishment.”
He later flip-flopped his stance on abortion after the backlash against the comment created a crisis for his campaign. In regards to foreign policy, Trump also released his plan on how he will force Mexico to pay for “the Wall” between their country and the US, receiving criticism from both countries. Then he provided another example of the danger of a Trump presidency claiming he would not rule out the use of nuclear weapons in Europe and the proliferation of nuclear technology in Japan and South Korea.
According to the New York Times in response President Obama said Trump:
doesn’t know much about foreign policy or nuclear policy or the Korean Peninsula or the world generally.”
These blows to Trump’s campaign proved to be enough to sway the large turnout of Wisconsin voters against him. According to the polls Cruz won 48.3 percent of the state and 33 of the 42 delegates up for grabs. Though Trump has support in the states ahead in the Northeast, gaining enough delegates for the nomination after this defeat will be a challenge for the controversial candidate.
Wisconsin has finally proved that many Americans will not stand for a potential candidate who continually spews misoginist, and racially vile views.
Is this the beginning of the end for Trump? Only time will tell.
