Blue plaque homage to Walter Tull

in

Yesterday, Walter Tull was honoured with a Nubian Jak Blue plaque in Tottenham, where he lived and made his name as a football star. Tull was the first black outfielder to play in the English premier league, making his football debut just around the corner from where the plaque was unveiled in 1909. Years later he would join the army to fight in WWI, becoming the first black British army officer. Unfortunately he ultimately lost his life on the battlefield in 1918.

Labour’s challenge up North

in

“LABOUR is finished!” That was the first response I heard from one of its activists in Yorkshire as the implications of the party’s near defeat in the Heywood and Middleton by-election, a safe North West constituency, sunk in. Suddenly Nigel Farage’s threat about his “people’s army” unleashing its revenge against a Westminster elite does not seem like a vainglorious boast after all.

Walter Tull to get Nubian Jak Blue plaque

Totthenham Hostspur legend Garth Crooks is to unveil the Nubian Jak Blue Plaque in honour of his hero Walter Tull.

When Walter Tull stepped onto the hallowed pitch at White Hart Lane on 1st September 1909, he became the first professional outfield Black player to play in England’s premier football division.

Within eight years of making his debut for Tottenham Hotspur, he would become the first Black British army officer in the war to end all wars.

Sadly, a year later he would make the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

Happy Birthday Rev Jesse Jackson

To mark the occasion, Rev Jackson met with students, health administrators, young voters, and broadcasters last week to draw awareness to current issues facing minority communities in the United States. He spoke about minority involvement in STEM careers, the recent militarization of police departments, voting challenges and the need for a Right to Vote amendment, and the US response to the Ebola crisis.

Still no justice for Duggan family

in

Three senior judges today rejected an appeal from Mark Duggan’s family that the Coroner of the original inquest into his killing, misdirected the Jury during his summing up.

Last summer the Jury found that Mark Duggan was lawfully killed by a Met officer in the summer of 2011, which sparked civil disturbances across the country.

The argument for the appeal centres around the Coroner Judge directing the jury that the officer might have been using self defence, even though the jury concluded Duggan was unarmed when he was shot.
