March 8th is celebrated annually as International Women’s Day, a day for honouring the achievements of women’s rights movements across the globe. It also serves as a reminder of how much farther we have yet to go in achieving gender and racial equality.

The holiday has its roots in the Socialist Party of America, which declared a National Women’s Day in 1909, one year after 15,000 working class women marched through the streets of New York calling for better pay, shorter working hours, and the right to vote.

The passing of the 'extraordinary' and 'fearless' campaigner Anwar Ditta has been widely mourned in recent days. Ditta is best known for her victorious campaign, which saw her fight back against the discriminatory immigration control laws of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Both her and her husband's (Shuja Ud Din) initial requests for the admission of their children were denied. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the Home Office maintained Ditta's children were not her own.

The outgoing Operation Black Vote Director, and new principal of Homerton College, Cambridge, is to fund bursaries for disadvantaged students.

Lord Woolley has pledged to support two full bursaries for disadvantaged students at Homerton College, Cambridge, as he takes up his role as Principal of the College.

The equalities campaigner and cross-bench peer, who will become the first Black man to lead a College at Cambridge or Oxford, will fund two full bursaries at Homerton each year.
