Jordan Sanghera: My time with OBV

in

Operation Black Vote’s office was graced with the presence of Jordan Sanghera, a 14-year-old student from Derby, who spent a week not only learning about the organisation, but also playing a vital role as a member of the team. He may not have been with us for long, but his help, like all interns and volunteers who give up their time to work at OBV, was greatly appreciated and he is welcome to the office any time. Jordan has ambitions of getting into politics and who knows, one day he may even challenge for high office. Here, he gives readers an insight into his time at OBV.

The Riots six months on

Leaders must lead not follow.

There were very few political leaders, Black or white, who were prepared to stand firm and explain an uncomfortable truth about some of collective elements that were key factors during last  summer’s riots, including: the death of Mark Duggan, shocking levels of BME Stop and Search and high levels of unemployment.

Sir Alex Ferguson calls for a tough line against racism

in

With some in football seemingly wanting to brush the issue of racism under the carpet, it is good to see Sir Alex Ferguson not only address the issue, but wanting to take firm stance against it.

The Manchester United manager spoke ahead of his team's Premier League clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.

This will be the first league meeting between the two sides since Liverpool's Luis Suarez served an eight-match ban for racially abusing United's Patrice Evra back in October.

The Black power salute and the third man

in

I read this story on the train and smiled, and nearly cried. I cry easy. It is an Olympic story that simply has everything: drama, sadness, politics, race politics, courage, banality, friendship, heresy, dignity, hope and redemption.

Clegg commented:

Adam Afriyie: Minister in waiting

in

Britain’s first Conservative MP of African descent, Adam Afriyie should be in line to become a Minister in a much anticipated Government reshuffle.

Elected in 2005, Afriyie quickly became a rising star, appointed as Shadow Minister for Innovation, Universities and Skills. On 23 March 2010, Afriyie looked across The House of Commons Dispatch Box to face his parliamentary opponent David Lammy MP, a quite symbolic moment in British political history.

in

A radiologist fears for the future of a support group launched to improve early diagnosis of breast cancer amongst Asian women.

Consultant radiologist Anil Jain at University Hospital of South Manchester launched the group in October 2011, hoping to improve cross-cultural communication between doctors, nurses and the Asian community, and allow patients and carers to share their experiences.
