Community Empowerment Roadshows
Is community improvement your passion? We are coming to your city! Sign up now!
OBV and BASSAC (British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres) will be running a brand new series of FREE seminars to increase Black and minority ethnic (BME) awareness and engagement in your local democratic process.
At the seminar you will explore your local council functions, look into the roles and responsibilities of a councillor and meet local councillors.
Francine Fernandes, Head of OBV Shadowing Schemes explains why political by-standing is not optional, she says; “In this age of austerity, the cuts are a realisation. The transition from vague political statement to significant changes in the delivery of local services is happening. Whether we subscribe to the cuts or not, they are in force and it is imperative, for our future, our children’s futures to ensure that as a community we stand up and be counted.
"The seminars will inform and inspire you on how you can help influence local decision - making and contribute to the process. We are looking for individuals with a passion to make a difference to their communities. No professional skills or qualifications required. Places are very limited, so apply today". She continued.
Birmingham City campaigner and Magistrate, Waseem Zaffar who helped to lead the Birmingham Empowerment Roadshow last year says of the day: "Events such as this are important in the capacity building of BME communities to play a role in the leadership of our cities and towns. I am pleased that this event has contributed in empowering the next generation of leaders in Birmingham's BME community."
Zaffar holds over a dozen public body positions including being a Justice of Peace and has been awarded for many of his roles in community service.
The free seminars are taking place in the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Southwark. Sessions will explain the decision-making process of allocating council resources and delegates will investigate options for their own active engagement in local issues.
OBV and BASSAC encourage BME individuals who wish to help shape their community to attend this unique event.
The next seminars will be held in
- Southwark in London on Saturday 12th February 2011(11am – 3.30pm)
