‘Access to elected office for disabled people.’

The Government Equalities Office (GEO), which is responsible for equalities legislation and policy in the UK, is currently seeking responses to a consultation titled ‘Access to elected office for disabled people.’

The consultation is designed to identify and examine the barriers faced by disabled people who want to be involved in local and national politics; and most importantly how to tackle these barriers.

If UK politics were to be fully representative of disabled people, you could expect to find at least sixty-five disabled MPs.

Two British football clubs have been accused of having racist fans after two separate incidents involving fans and black players.

Football club West Ham United have started an investigation into allegations of racial abuse against the families of players Victor Obinna and Frédéric Piquionne (pictured) during last weeks home defeat to Manchester United.

Trevor Phillips: TUC Black Workers Conference

EHRC Chair Trevor Philips will address  the annual  TUC Black Workers Conference today.

Black and Asian workers are almost twice as likely to be out of work as white workers, and public sector spending cuts could see large numbers of those employed lose their jobs.

The conference debates the major issues facing black workers in the labour market. It is attended by delegations sent by trade unions affiliated to the TUC.

Janet, a graduate of OBV’s 2010 Lewisham Civic Leadership Development Programme, is now the project coordinator for Rushey Green Time Bank’s “Bring & Fix” community event, an intergenerational volunteer fair that will take place on Saturday, April 9th.

On Thursday May 5th there are local elections in many parts of the UK. In Wales and Northern Ireland there are also elections for the devolved assemblies, and in Scotland there are Parliamentary elections.

However, there is one vote that everyone will have throughout the UK. A vote in the AV referendum. The referendum is to decide the voting system we use to elect our Westminster MPs.
