Terry Fitzpatrick: guilty of racism

For over a decade Terry Fitzpatrick has waged a race hate campaign against a number of leading Black figures working in race equality, including Unite against Fascism boss, Weyman Bennett, Lee Jasper, Lester Holloway and myself.

Last Friday a jury of his peers at Snaresbrook Crown court found  the racist Fitzpatrick unanimously guilty of racially aggravated harassment charges .

Baroness Warsi: New Whitehall internships announced

Co-Conservative Chairman, Baroness Warsi, has launched a new ‘Whitehall Internship’ programme.

The programme is one of three internship schemes designed for graduates and undergraduates, college students and secondary students who come from under-represented groups, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities and people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Harry's Place and Searchlight harboured racist

Terry Fitzpatrick was a supposed anti racist. He often boasted about his credentials of working with the Searchlight organisation for many years. He claims to be personal friend with many Bangladeshi activists and have worked on many anti-fascist campaigns. Some on the left considered Terry an iconic figure. Last week saw him convicted at Snaresbrook Crown Court of racially aggravated harassment charges.

Michael Gove controversy over Mosque comments

Education Minister Michael Gove has provoked controversy with his comments over the building of a Mosque in his Surrey Heath constituency near the Sandhurst military base. The Mosque lost its planning permission sparking a public inquiry into the decision.

When asked why he opposed the building of the Mosque he said:

"Because of the way in which it would overlook the royal military academy, (the mosque) would also not be appropriate for all sorts of other reasons."

Mari Rees, a sad loss

OBV would like to pay tribute to Mari Rees who sadly passed away over the weekend. Aged 51, Mari had fought a courageous battle against cancer. She was a graduate of OBV’s Welsh Assembly Shadowing Scheme and was on the verge of making political history in Wales.

Martin Luther King: March and remembrance

Across the USA today there will be many events marking the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King 43 years ago on April 4, 1968.

On Saturday Rev Jesse Jackson and several hundred Wisconsin citizens marched through Milwaukee ahead of today’s anniversary. The marchers waived signs that read, “This is what democracy looks like," "Save our unions and collective bargaining," and “Stop the attacks on public sector workers.” Placards reminiscent of the London march two weeks ago.

Another 'death in care'

Another ‘death in care’ has seen community and church joined in condemnation against police and mental health procedures this week.

Kingsley Burrell Brown tragically lost his life just days after being admitted into psychiatric services.

Brown' death comes just two weeks after that of death of Smiley Culture, who died during a police raid on his home just last month.
