The Mangrove: My University of activism | Lee Jasper

The premiere of the #MangroveNine was shown on Sunday 15th November 2020. For me this is a seminal moment in black British history. For the first time, the real revolutionary story of the struggle for British civil rights is being told.

Having worked with the founder of the Mangrove, Frank Critchlow, I thought it only fitting to remember and honour a man I consider to be my political godfather.

Success at Baton Awards

Operation Black Vote alumni Sharon Thompson and Sanchia Alasia took centre stage at the Baton awards as both were shortlisted as finalists for The Political Figure of the Year award. The pair were joined by Public Liaison Officer for Greater London Lorraine Eyers who rounded off the shortlist. In the end, it was Councillor Sharon Thompson who emerged victorious and was announced as the winner of the 2020 Political figure award.

NBC News estimate that 91% of Black Women voted Democrat. Their powerful influence was also seen on the campaign front line too. Guiding voters to assume their right to vote, advising on the ways how to assert your eligibility to vote and showing all voters what their vote means and that their will count.

Operation Black Vote is pleased once again to support and add value to the research analysis by the Carnegie Trust. Their focus on race inequality in the workforce predates Covid and this wealth of information that they already have has given them a strong platform to help us all make sense of how and why Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities are being particularly badly hit by this disease in regards to work, and health, including mental health.

The Black Girls Tech Summit organised by GIRLS TALK London will be taking place virtually across the two days of Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th November 2020 4:00-8:30pm GMT. This year's iteration, which will be the second edition of the event will feature Facebook, Snap Inc and a host of influential speakers, panellists, sessions, and networking and exhibition spaces for attendees to enjoy. 1202 people have registered to attend the event so far, with the number likely to grow before it's launch on the 24th.

The US presidential elections and the defeat of Donald J Trump was all about race. It was cited as second only to the economy by Americans when polled about their electoral concerns. Trump’s contemptuous response to the death of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, coupled with his quasi-fascist sympathies enraged and mobilised the Democrats, liberals and the young electorate of America amongst others.
