Magid Magid MEP (Green)
Magid Magid is the Green MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber. He was elected in the May 2019 European Parliament Elections, becoming the frist Green MEP of African descent.
Born in Somalia, Magid came to Britain as a young refuge. He left Somalia with his family in 1994 and spent six months in a refugee camp in Ethiopia before being admitted to Britain where they moved to Burngreave, Sheffield. Living in an economically deprived area, Magid had to learn English while he began attending school as his mother worked as a cleaner to support her children through school. Magid attended Longley Park Sixth Form College and Hull University.
In 2014 Magid joined the Green Party and in 2016 he was elected as a Green Party councillor for Broomhill and Shallow Vale in Sheffield City Council in 2016. While serving as a councillor Magid sat on the Safer and Stronger Communities Scrutiny and Policy Committee and on the Senior Officer Employment Committee.
In 2018 Magid was elected as the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, becoming the first ethnic Somali, the youngest ever and the first Green Party councillor to hold that position.
