Alan Mak's parents opened a small shop on a Yorkshire high street which they would run for over 20 years.  This is principally what has inspired his career in business, and interest in local communities.

Shabana Mahmood, Labour candidate for Birmingham Ladywood

Shabana Mahmood MP was born and brought up in Small Heath, Birmingham. During her time studying Law at Oxford, she helped to increase applications to Oxbridge by students from minority and disadvantaged backgrounds, something she still continues.

Rehman Chishti

Rehman is a qualified barrister, who once served as a political adviser to Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan.

On Medway Council he represented Gillingham North Ward from 2003–2007, and the Rainham Central Ward from 2007-2010

Since being elected the MP for Gillingham and Rainham in May 2010 Rehman has campaigned on several issues including local NHS services, rail services, protecting Capstone Valley and land at Otterham Quay Lane, and preventing an Estuary Airport.

With only ten days to go before polling day OBV will now largely focus attention on getting BME communities to vote on May 7th.

Our voter registration campaign bus, the ‘OBV eXpress’ visited over 20 areas around the country and engaged with thousands in a broad discussion about political engagement and voter registration.

Joe Stuart, Green party, Battersea

Joe has worked in Wandsworth Council's housing department for over 20 years, 10 years as a repair officer and 10 years in environmental services as an inspector.  He has dedicated over 25 years to the voluntary service in his local community.

This is the first time Joe has stood at an election for the Green party.

Bim Afolami, Conservative PPC for Lewisham and Deptford

Bim is a corporate lawyer who advises both big and small businesses. As well as his legal career, he also serves as a governor to a local primary school and is involved with a number of charities.

Having attended Oxford University, Bim is passionate about education and wants to provide better schools, as well as prioritise affordable housing, additional trains to central London and better quality local jobs.

Ben Foday, Plaid Cymru for Cardiff South and Penarth

Ben was born and educated in Sierra Leone, but has lived in the Welsh capital for more than 30 years, and works for an employment agency.

A well-known local campaigner, Ben’s political interests include social justice and economic development.

Ben served as a Labour councillor for 6 years until 1999, but then defected to Plaid Cymru and is running for the seat of Cardiff South and Penarth.
