Oona King
Baroness King of Bow was appointed to the House of Lords in 2011. She has sat on the Adoption Legislation Committee as well as the Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Committee. She is currently a Diversity Executive at Channel 4.
Her early jobs included Trade Union organiser, as well as researcher for the European Parliament. From 1997 to 2005 she served as MP for Bethnal Green & Bow. During her time in the House of Commons she founded the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Genocide Prevention, which received commendation from the UN Security Council for its efforts in peace-keeping. She held positions in several different committees, including Treasurer for Friends of Islam.
From 2007 to 2009 King acted as senior policy advisor to the Prime Minister on Equalities and Diversity. During this time she also published a book about her experience in the House of Commons, titled House Music (Bloomsbury 2007).
Baroness King was born in 1967 in Sheffield to an African-American father and Jewish mother. She currently lives with her husband and three children in Tower Hamlets.
