David Lammy has served as Labour MP for Tottenham since 2000. Recently in the December 2019 General Election, David received 35,621 votes, which equalled a 76% majority, retaining his seat.
Elected in 2000 for Tottenham MP at the age of 27, David Lammy's background is rooted in the constituency he now represents. Born and raised in Tottenham, in 1972, Lammy studied law at both the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and Harvard Law School.
He was politically active throughout University, and spent his holidays volunteering for the Free Representation Unit, representing people in tribunals or in cases brought before the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.
He did a placement in Jamaica, working for Amnesty International, volunteered in Thailand for Prisoners Abroad, and has practiced as a lawyer in London and in California.
Before becoming a Minister, David was a member of the All-party Group on Rwanda and the Prevention of Genocide, the British-Caribbean All-party Group and the All-party Group on Aids, and sat on the board of the Church of England.
He recently stepped down as a trustee of ActionAid, the international development charity, but remains involved as an Honorary Ambassador. He is an Associate Fellow in the Centre for Caribbean Studies at Warwick University, and is the patron of several charities aimed at supporting young people from inner-city and ethnic minority backgrounds to fulfill their potential.
David has served as a minister in the Department of Health, Department of Constitutional Affairs, Department for Innovation, and Minister for Culture in the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport. In June 2007 Lammy was appointed as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
In June 2009 the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills was abolished and merged to form the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Lammy continued in the new department in his previous role as the Minister for Higher Education.
He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of East London, sits on the International Advisory board of the School of Oriental and African Studies, and is a member of the Royal Society of the Arts.
