Preet Gill MP (Labour)

Preet Gill is the Labour MP for Birmingham Edgbaston and was elected in the December 2019 General Election receiving 21,217 votes, which equaled a 50.1% majority.

Preet was elected as the first ever female Sikh MP.

As well as becoming an MP in June 2017, Preet also became a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee. Before being elected however, Preet served as a councilor for St Paul’s Ward in the Sandwell Metropolitan Borough, and was the Cabinet Member for Public Health and Protection. Preet’s passion for politics stems from her father, a former factory worker and bus driver who worked tirelessly for the local community.

Prior to her political career, Preet studied sociology and social work at the University of East London, where she attained a First Class Honours. In addition, Preet also worked in India for UNICEF and other non-governmental organizations where she conducted research into street children.

For over 20 years, Preet worked in social care within the West Midlands area and has also sat on the West Midland’s police and crime panel. As well as this, Preet also worked for the Children’s Services where she gave assistance to families of vulnerable children. On top of this, Preet is also the director of Spring Social Housing Board, whose ethos is to go back to the original aims of the housing association movement and work with those most in need of housing.

Since her election, Preet has promised to continue the fight for the NHS and local GP practices, fair funding for Birmingham’s transport and local services, and continue the fight against education cuts.
