Chi Onwurah MP (Labour)

Chi Onwurah has served as Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central since 2010. Recently in the December 2019 General Election, Chi received 21,568 votes, which equalled a 57.6% majority, retaining her seat.

She has served as the Shadow Minister for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (Industrial Strategy) since October 2016. Previously, she has served as Shadow Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills, Shadow Minister for Culture, Media and Sport, and Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office.

Chinyela 'Chi' Onwurah was born in Newcastle in 1965. She attended Kenton School before studying Electrical Engineering, graduating from Imperial College in 1987. Ms Onwurah worked in hardware and software management, product management, market development and strategy for a variety of companies in the UK, France, US, Nigeria, and Denmark. She also has an MBA from Manchester Business School and has Chartered Engineer status.

Chi was involved in the Anti Apartheid movement, on the national executive of ACTSA. More recently she has joined the Advisory Board of the Open University Business School.

Ms Onwurah became Newcastle's first black MP in the 2010 election. She was appointed as junior Shadow Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills in 2010 and then was appointed Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office in 2013. She now serves as the Shadow Minister for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (Industrial Strategy).
